Yes, the very first $500 note was issued by the Province of North Carolina in May of 1780, with Virginia following a $500 note of its own later that year. The $500 bill issued in 1862 had a portrait of Albert Gallatin, the longest-serving Secretary of the Treasury. The original version of the $1000 bill had Alexander Hamilton’s, but it was replaced.
